I’ve been re-reading an autobiography of S. John Henry Newman (“Bright Evening Star” – Revd Dr Canon Rod Garner) and came across this:
“…delighted in nature, and derived solace from music, playing the violin into old age, with a particular attachment to the works of Mozart and Beethoven. Music remained a gateway to the world of the spirit, and, as he once wrote, the peace it afforded was one of the signs of the presence of God.”

Thank you, Andrew and what a lovely passage that is. I have been a great fan ever since singing in Gerontius. I especially like his prayer which uses the lines ‘He knows what He’s about’.
